Marble kiots
A kiot in the Orthodox Church is a frame or ark for storing icons. Its prototype is the Ark of the Covenant of the Jerusalem Temple, which contained the Tablets of the Covenant with the commandments, a vessel with manna and the Aaron’s rod.
The first kiots served exclusively to protect icons from soot and candle flames, humidity, temperature fluctuations, sunlight and dust. The frames were equipped with shutters that opened only on the days of great Christian holidays so that believers could pray to the icon, touch the shrine and receive a blessing.
Over time, the role of the kiots expanded. Today, it is not only a protective case that repeatedly prolongs the life of the icon, but also emphasizes its importance and the power of veneration.
The church kiosk is a frame with vaults symbolizing the dome of the temple above the icon. Kiot is perceived as a miniature temple, serving as a visual and spiritual center for the prayer concentration of believers.
The products differ in design and type of arrangement. Kiots can be single or composite (combining several sections and designed to store three, four, five or more icons at once).
Floor and wall structures are distinguished by their location. Floor coverings are usually massive, and can be supplemented with a place for hanging a lamp or for placing other church utensils.
Features of marble kiots
The first kiots were made mainly of wood, since the material was easy to process.
Nowadays, marble kiots are preferred due to the ability to emphasize the majesty of the temple interior and the reverent atmosphere, while not distracting from the Image with excessive gold. Natural stone is resistant to environmental factors and mechanical stress, which makes it an ideal material for framing sacred icons.
Let’s take a closer look at what advantages marble kiots have:
- they are not susceptible to deformation, which ensures the durability of church utensils made of marble, even in conditions of high humidity;
- they do not burn out and do not fade in the sun, they retain their original shade and texture for many years;
- marble is resistant to insect and mold damage, so it does not require additional protective treatment;
- in case of sudden temperature changes, the material does not crack or crumble, which makes the church utensils made of it suitable for use in any temperature regime;
- natural patterns of natural stone give each product uniqueness, emphasizing its aesthetic value;
- marble kiots are easy to clean and polish, which greatly simplifies care for it.
- marble church utensils are perfectly combined with various architectural styles and harmonize with any interior of the church.
At the request of the customer, the marble kiot is decorated with carvings, mosaics, gilded or silvered brass casting, emphasizing the solemnity of the product. The structure can be complemented with columns with capitals and arches, giving it grandeur and monumentality.
