Marble and Granite Floor

Marble floor with mosaic

Marble floor plays an important role in creating a majestic and solemn atmosphere in the temple. The stone has unique natural patterns and shades, which gives the interior of the church expressiveness. The use of marble in the design of the floor emphasizes the importance and significance of the sacred space, reflects the pious attitude towards the House of God. In the Byzantine Empire, the facing of temple floors with marble stood out as an independent direction of art. Masters used large slabs of several types of stone with different shades and textures to create complex mosaics that continue to amaze contemporaries with their splendor and sophistication. The floor in the temple must withstand significant and constant mechanical loads, because hundreds of parishioners pass through it every day. In addition, candle wax or oil from lamps gets on the floor. Using soft and layered materials for flooring threatens that the floor will quickly wear out and become cracked. To avoid such problems and get a durable coating, you should give preference to a floor made of durable types of marble, which can maintain its original appearance for hundreds of years. Due to its high wear resistance, marble as a flooring material is widely used not only in temple construction. Marble floors have proven themselves well in museums, government institutions, educational institutions, hotels, train stations and airports, and shopping malls. All these places are characterized by a large flow of visitors, so increased requirements are placed on the durability and ease of care of the floor covering.

Advantages of marble flooring

The density of different varieties of marble is on average from 2.2 to 2.9 g/cm³, and the hardness varies within 2.5-3 on the Mohs scale, that is, the stone is quite strong and resistant to mechanical stress. The high density is associated with the mineralogical composition of marble. Its hard and durable matrix is formed by calcite (calcium carbonate). That is why the marble floor does not crack or crumble under the weight of furniture and in conditions of active movement. Other advantages of marble flooring:
  • the stone does not fade or fade under the influence of sunlight, preserving its natural shade for centuries;
  • after impregnation, the marble floor does not absorb water, therefore it is not afraid of mold and withstands repeated wet cleaning;
  • when laying marble on large areas in compliance with technological calculations and using specialized adhesives and membranes, it is possible to ensure the resistance of the coating to temperature changes (including underfloor heating systems);
  • the marble floor lends itself well to polishing, which allows it to maintain its aesthetic appearance for many years.
