Marble carving

Marble carving

Marble is a natural stone known for its durability, resistance to environmental factors and noble appearance. These qualities have made it a consistently requested material for the interior and exterior decoration of churches and temples, the manufacture of monuments and sculptures, and the design of premium interiors.

Marble carving is one of the types of church products decoration . Thanks to it, the craftsmen create exquisite ornaments that emphasize the solemnity and grandeur of the temple atmosphere.

The following elements of the church interior and exterior are decorated with carvings:

  • iconostases and altar barriers;
  • facades, cornices
  • columns, capitals and pilasters;
  • royal doors and icon kiots;
  • balustrades, railings and arches;
  • baptismal fonts and candle holders;
  • wall panels and decorative bas-reliefs;
  • fences;
  • wayside and gravestone crosses

The ancient Greeks are considered to be the discoverers of marble, who gave it its name: “marble” in Greek means “shiny stone”. Thanks to marble used for construction, cladding, and sculpture making, examples of architecture and art from Hellas and Ancient Rome have been preserved to our era.

The Church of the Virgin Mary, the first stone temple of Kievan Rus (1st millennium A.D.), was called “Marmoryan”, in the interior decoration of which Greek marble was used.

Due to the improvement of stone-cutting tools and the discovery of new stone deposits, marble carving began to develop rapidly in the X-XVII centuries. During this period, marble decorative elements began to decorate the facades of not only churches, but also secular buildings.

This stone is easily amenable to fine processing, and its resistance to mechanical damage, temperature, moisture, and ultraviolet sunlight ensures the safety of marble decorations for centuries.

Marble carving technology

According to the method of execution, marble carving can be divided into hand, machine-tool and combined. Each method has advantages and disadvantages:

  • Hand carving involves the use of exclusively hand tools: hammers, chisels, gouge and other specialized devices. The main advantages of hand carving are uniqueness and high artistic value. Each element is created individually, which allows you to achieve exceptional detail. However, the process takes longer and requires high mastery. The disadvantages are the labor intensity and high cost of work.
  • Machine-tool carving. Modern equipment such as numerically controlled milling machines (CNC) is used here. They allow you to quickly and accurately create complex patterns, reproduce details in large numbers, and work with marbles of different thicknesses. The advantages of machine-tool carving are the speed of execution, the ability to implement complex geometric shapes. However, the product may lose its artistic uniqueness, since the drawing is most often created according to a given template, trite and without the necessary elegance.
  • Combined carving. The most justified approach is one that combines mechanical processing and manual refinement. The machine performs the main part of the work, creating a basic drawing or shape, and the master manually adds details, emphasizes textures and completes the composition. This method reduces the process time, while allowing the specialist to apply a creative approach and preserve the uniqueness of the product. It is the perfect combination of speed, quality and artistic value.

A special place in stone carving is occupied by the technique of undercuts. This technique provides depth of study and layering of the drawing, creating voluminous, elegant, realistic elements that seem to hang over the surface. Undercutting is performed by processing the inside of the carved part at an angle, which creates the illusion of space and shadow.
